Great Scott!! The “Movie Scientist Blogathon” is Back!

17 Jun

The “Movie Scientist Blogathon: The Good, the Mad, the Lonely” is back for 2017! I am so excited to be co-hosting this event with Ruth at Silver Screenings.

The blogathon is about movie scientists. The good scientists, the mad scientists, and the lonely scientists. The idea originated from a discussion between Ruth and myself about how scientists get into all sorts of trouble because they insist on working alone (like Dr. Frankenstein) instead of getting an outside opinion that might prevent careless mistakes or unfortunate occurrences. The blogathon is not, however, limited to only lonely scientists.

When – September 8-10, 2017

Each day is dedicated to a different subset of scientists.

Day 1 (8th) – The Good

Day 2 (9th) – The Mad

Day 3 (10th) – The Lonely

How – You can sign up by filling out the form below. If you want to do more than one topic, simply fill out a separate form for each topic. Be sure to choose which day your scientist or film fits in. If you have a scientists that could be put into more than one category, feel free to choose the day that works best for you.

On the evening of each day of the blogathon, Silver Screenings and I will put up a recap of the day’s posts. To send us your post, simply paste the link of your post to one of our comments sections or tweet it to us (I can be found at @_cwehner) and we will include it in the recap. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact either me or Ruth at Silver Screenings.

Rules – Because there are so many movie scientists to choose from, we are not allowing duplicate posts on any film. Once a film has been chosen by one blogger, it is no longer available, unless you would like to compare it to another film (like comparing the 1931 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with the 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). We are also not including television scientists in this blogathon, but there are no limits on what time period the film can be from, from the silent era to 2017.

To help us get the word out, please feel free to grab one of the banners at the bottom of this post, which I want to thank Ruth for creating!

    Hi Christina
I submitted an entry to do a post on The Man With Two Brains with Steve Martin
I picked the “Mad Scientist” day if that is okay?
This looks like a lot of fun 🙂

This sounds really fun. I’ve picked Doctor Emmett Brown from Back To The Future.

This sounds so excellent! It was a tough decision for me, but I decided to write about Metropolis. I need to see the most up-to-date restored version, and this is the perfect opportunity to do so!

Oooh, that will be great! I’m not quite sure if I’ve seen the most up-to-date one, either. Hmm…I’d better look into that.

But you are most welcome to write about more than one topic, if there is any other films you want to write about! 🙂

I think there was between 30 – 45 minutes of lost footage found in a vault in Argentina in 2010/2011. So the story is definitely more of its original intent.

I will have a think about any other films! I am participating in another blogathon set for that weekend, and I am thinking about potential travel around that time as well. But I shall have a think! Thanks again 🙂

I wanna play! I wanna play! I wanna play! The only movie that’s coming to mind right now is Forbidden Planet, which I guess would qualify as a lonely scientist entry. I’m already committed to Thoughts All Sorts for the Colours Blogathon, but as soon as I decide whether to add a Good or Mad scientist, I’ll set the date for that one to be the other date (its the 8th and 9th…)

So glad to have you!! 🙂 I finally got to see Forbidden Planet last year and was so struck with it. Looking forward to seeing what else you write about!

I’ve got a second movie but I can’t decide whether the character in good or mad. He starts out good at any rate. The character is Ray Milland’s doctor in X-The Man with X-ray Eyes.

That’s an interesting problem. He does sound like he could be in either category. Do you feel like the film is more about how a good man can become mad or how a mad man could once be good.

Looking forward to this opportunity. I missed out on a previous blogathon but not this time! I will be looking at Black Friday (1940) with Boris Karloff, following the theme of a good man that turns wrong. Thanks for organising!

Hey! Can I also write about The Rocky Horror Picture Show?? I love musicals and I am a Halloween baby, so how can I not love this one? 😛 I would consider Dr. Frank N Furter to be a “mad” scientist for sure. Would you be able to move the date for Metropolis to the 10th, as I think Rotwang could be a “lonely” scientist as well. Thanks!

Sorry to be a bother again! Can I just do Rocky Horror? It will be more manageable, and then someone else can do Metropolis if they want. Thanks for putting up with my indecisiveness haha.

No trouble at all! I was indecisive, too, and changed the date of my choice. I will remove Metropolis now. 🙂

Ok thanks! I figured Rocky Horror would be a fun choice and probably is not the first movie that comes to mind when you think of movie scientists 😛

Very true! Though I must admit I have not seen Rocky Horror yet, but can’t wait to read about it and its connection to scientists! 🙂

Definitely! It was actually the original The Fly movie that inspired the blogathon, so it seems very fitting to include a The Fly movie. 🙂

Hmmm…do you think of him as a lonely scientists? I haven’t seen it yet (only the original), but does he go mad? He could be good, though he does turn into a fly.

But perhaps if he works alone, he could be a lonely scientists?
