Some Christmas Songs!!

14 Dec

Bing Crosby singing “Christmas is A’Comin'”

Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters sing “12 Days of Christmas”

There’s no Irving Berlin Christmas song more famous than “White Christmas,” but he wrote other excellent festive songs, as well. One song is “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” which was introduced by Dick Powell in the 1937 film On the Avenue, a lesser-known film with a terrific Berlin score. Well worth watching to hear Dick Powell and Alice Faye sing.

Alice Faye was, alas, prevented by 20th Century Fox from recording more while she was making films, which is definitely our loss. She had a beautiful voice!

Do you prefer the film, Holiday Inn, or White Christmas?

Hmmm…I think Holiday Inn, simply because of the wonderful addition of Fred Astaire’s dancing, but I like both movies. I try to alternate and watch one or the other every year.

      Which do you prefer?

Thanks for recommendations of other great Bing Crosby Christmas songs. He’s one of my favorites in general, (I recorded “High Society” on TCM last night!), so I appreciate learning about other great songs he’s sung. I’m also partial to his collaborations with the Andrews Sisters—especially “Mele Kalikimaka” at this time of year!

I also enjoy Dick Powell and Alice Faye—will have to look for “On the Avenue” on the Fox retro channel or request it on TCM for next year!

I hope you get a chance to see On the Avenue! The music is really quite excellent!

I don’t think I’ve heard them sing “Mele Kalikimaka” yet – I’ll have to listen to that this evening. Thanks! Bing Crosby is really great, isn’t he!
